THE DAY I DECIDED TO BE FIT 4 EVER
The Day I Decided to be Fit 4 Ever
Being from an athletic family is not the easiest thing when you are the most accident prone person in the family history. My family has produced some great athletes including 1 female Olympic basketball player, 1 WNB hall of famer, 2 college level coaches, 2 professional football players (including a super bowl winner), 2 professional basketball players, and 1 heavy weight champion of the world and numerous high school and collegiate athlete hall of famers. And then of course there was me. After a lot of determination and work on my part, I began to develop as an athlete. I had aspirations to be a female body builder – no one in my family had done that before.
After 2 children, and 15 years at a desk job, let’s just say my athletic years was way behind me( and on the side of me, on top of me)- I was an hefty 268lbs. My Zen moment came when the pictures came back from my family reunion in 2000. Needless to say, I knew I had to do something. So I began with the yo-yo, fad diets and the slimming pants that all you had to do was sleep in them and you would lose weight. Every diet pill, plan and prank I tried, and failed. So I began to read and study about obesity and the metabolic syndrome. I started to exercise and make gradual changes in the way I ate. Eventually I began to teach fitness classes. My passion began to burn and I actually started taking classes to get fitness certifications.
My first business venture was Personal Trainer on the Go ™. I went to clients’ home with my fitness equipment worked out with them at home. This was a huge success and convenience for clients, but I was all over the place. So I approached a local gym about training in their facility in exchange for teaching fitness classes for them. Once again business grew, but a dishonest gym manager and an one partnership spilt later and I found myself out on the street and training outside. That was huge boost to the business, because what was supposed to be lemons turned out to be lemonade. I had many clients who liked training outdoors. Finally, as winter approached I found a great place to have a studio. I was in top shape as a female bodybuilder competitor, 8 certifications under my built and a growing clientele, when I got the startling news I have breast cancer.
Once again I found my life and fitness business had to change. Cancer was beyond lemons, it just plain sucked. I decided that there had to be more than the body and mind (sports psychology) that was trained; the spirit must be included too! So I began to study the ayruveda and the vedic sciences. I endured 36 months of intense chemotherapy, 4 surgeries and I never once stopped exercising or training clients. Through that experience I became more than a cancer survivor, I became a cancer thriver! Now I share my experiences and my vedic training philosophy all around the world. I like to think of myself as “ the only personal training center this side of the Canadian border that helps the client discover their own personal owners manual to a healthy balanced mind, body, & spirit."
